Quinn Taplin — Director of Photography and cinematographer based in Phoenix, Arizona, on set behind the camera

I'm Quinn Taplin. I make pictures for a living.

My love for images started at a young age, shooting on film and developing my own rolls in a school darkroom. Watching a print come up in the chemistry never left me. The patience and craft of it all. Light becoming something physically real.

My path into cinematography was earned. Fourteen years professionally behind the camera, thirty + countries, eight of those years spent living abroad. I've shot narrative, documentary, corporate and commercial work, national, regional, and local, for brands ranging from scrappy startups to global names, along with original shows picked up by Netflix. That time overseas taught me how to read a room, a crew and a culture quickly. Learned skills that shape every project I step onto. I also spent part of those years as a Director of Marketing in Southeast Asia, a side of the industry most DP’s never see. This life has taught me what makes a commercial ad actually work, not just what makes it look good. I've shot hiring campaigns that have well outperformed their goals, three commercials that have aired during the Super Bowl, work that plays on the big screens at stadiums and images that live on the walls of international airports.

I started as a stills flash photographer, then spent years as an assistant camera before moving into operating. I'm grateful I took the long way. It gave me a true feel for the craft you can't shortcut.

I'm an owner-operator and run a small rental house, Drifthouse Media Co., out of Phoenix, Arizona, so I can bring a tailored package. You can view the full equipment list at drifthouse.co/equipment-rentals. I surround myself with others who invest in their craft as much as I invest in mine.

My goal is to serve the story. The camera is just the tool I do it with. Before anything else, it's there to listen. Light should feel found, and color should mean something. Movement should earn its place, and when it doesn't, the frame should hold still and let the moment breathe.

That belief shapes how I choose my work. I find time to give back, partnering with nonprofits telling stories that matter. I mentor students and emerging filmmakers because somebody did that for me once.

Always up for a good project. Drop a line.
